JAMIA STUDENTS FACE YET ANOTHER CRISIS The recent incident that took place in the JAMIA MIILLIA ISLAMIA UNIVERSITY, NEW DELHI is the issue that is required to bring in light among the concerned and intellectual minds .It is the shocking and the heart-throbing incidence that reveals the atrocities done by DELHI POLICE. This is a big slap for those who talk in a loud voice about the secularism and democracy.
It all started innocuosly enough with the Delhi Police searching for two
miscreants near the Jamia Millia University university campus. (DAY?)
Trouble began when the police erroneously homed in on two bonafide and
innocent students near the campus' main library.
The students resisted the arrest and matters escalated from there even as
other students in the library protested against the police's heavy
handedness.
In what amounts to totally unjustified use of force, the police started
using tear gas shells and the students wree foolish enough to respond with
stone-throwing. With this excuse, the police stormed into
the hostel premises at around 11:35 pm sunday evening (09-04-2k) without any
prior permission from university authorities. Their raid lasted well into
the morning. Hostel provost, Dr. Sami was the first person to be beaten
up the police when he asked the police to show a search warrant and permission
from authorities to enter the hostel. The police then unexplicably went on a
rampage, breaking down doors and dragging out hostelers in the main SR Kidwai
Hostel.
The students then were brutally hit by wooden rods, most of the students were thrown from 2nd floor of the hostel.
In a bizarre turn, the police turned on the mosque in the hostel premises,
ransacking the premises and abusing and beating the IMAM, leaving hims with a
fractured hand. They also threw copies of the Qur'an and beat up some students
praying there.
Police moved on to the other boys hostels on the campus committing similar
atrocities. In all, around 150 students were arrested and taken into police
custody without any charges. In a display of rank communalism, the police then
went on to charge the students with being "Muslim fundamentalists"
and "terrorists," focusing specially on Kashmiris and bearded
students, many of whom are still in custody facing cooked up charges.
Jamia authorities particularly the Vice-chancellor showed a complete lack of
concern, not even taking any moral responsibilities for allowing the
incident to take place.
It is really a matter of shame for the Delhi police officials who were
involved in these heinous activities. There should be a proper investigation
into these matters and strict measures should be taken against the communal
police officials who were involved in vitiating the secular educational
environment.
A legacy of the previous 'military' rule Gen. MA Zaki is that there is no
student union in the university, so there is no official voice channelise
the students demands for justice and adequate redressal against this
inhumane act. Unfortunately this has led politicians to enter the game to
further their own political agendas especially through provocative speeches
which would create more tensions on the campus.
We the students of Jamia Millia Islamia University seek a proper support
that could lead us to get justice. This is an appeal to all the concerned
people to ponder over the matter and try their level best to take their own
way of possible actions as far as possible for the sake of humanity and for
the sake of Muslim community.
There are certain demands that we put forth: 1.The students subjected to fake cases should be given justice by removing all the charges against them. 2.There should be a proper inquiry in all these matters that has led to develop a sense of insecurity among the Muslim minority. 3.Actions should be taken against those who were found guilty, that has perturbed the fair mind due to mental and physical torture against them. Please write to the Indian Government, Human rights organisation etc to bring to everyone's notice the way Indian Muslims are dealt with by the Indian police. Students,
